Chess Advisor — Terms of Use
Effective date: 21 October 2026
These terms apply to the Chess Advisor app for Android and iOS ("the app"), published by ConeM Labs ("we", "us"). Contact: support@conemlabs.com · https://conemlabs.com. By installing or using the app you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the app.
Summary
- Every feature of the app is free. There are no ads and no account. Optional supporter subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel them, and add only supporter perks.
- It is a study tool. Don't use it to get help during games you are playing, rated or not, where outside help isn't allowed.
- The optional AI features have daily limits to prevent abuse, and their answers can be wrong.
- Engine analysis, AI text and board or scoresheet scans can contain mistakes. Use your own judgement.
- How we handle data is described in the Privacy Policy.
1. The app and your licence
We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the app on devices you own or control, for your own non-commercial chess study and play. We may update, change or remove features, or stop offering the app, at any time.
The app contains open-source software, including the Caissa chess engine (MIT License). Those components are licensed under their own terms, which are listed in the app under Settings → About & licenses. Nothing in these terms limits your rights under those licences. Apart from that, you may not copy, modify, resell or redistribute the app, or reverse engineer it except where the law allows it.
Narration voice. The optional narration voice uses the Supertonic 2 voice model by Supertone Inc., which you download only if you ask for it. The model is licensed under the BigScience Open RAIL-M License; a copy is in the app under Settings → About & licenses. That licence requires us to pass on its use restrictions, so, as a condition of using the narration voice, you agree not to use the model, or anything derived from it, through the app or otherwise:
- in any way that violates any applicable national, federal, state, local or international law or regulation;
- for the purpose of exploiting, harming or attempting to exploit or harm minors in any way;
- to generate or disseminate verifiably false information and/or content with the purpose of harming others;
- to generate or disseminate personal identifiable information that can be used to harm an individual;
- to generate or disseminate information and/or content (for example images, code, posts, articles), and place the information and/or content in any context (for example a bot generating posts) without expressly and intelligibly disclaiming that the information and/or content is machine generated;
- to defame, disparage or otherwise harass others;
- to impersonate or attempt to impersonate (for example deepfakes) others without their consent;
- for fully automated decision making that adversely impacts an individual's legal rights or otherwise creates or modifies a binding, enforceable obligation;
- for any use intended to or which has the effect of discriminating against or harming individuals or groups based on online or offline social behavior or known or predicted personal or personality characteristics;
- to exploit any of the vulnerabilities of a specific group of persons based on their age, social, physical or mental characteristics, in order to materially distort the behavior of a person pertaining to that group in a manner that causes or is likely to cause that person or another person physical or psychological harm;
- for any use intended to or which has the effect of discriminating against individuals or groups based on legally protected characteristics or categories;
- to provide medical advice and medical results interpretation;
- to generate or disseminate information for the purpose to be used for administration of justice, law enforcement, immigration or asylum processes, such as predicting an individual will commit fraud/crime commitment (for example by text profiling, drawing causal relationships between assertions made in documents, indiscriminate and arbitrarily-targeted use).
The voice reads the app's own chess explanations aloud. Its audio is machine generated; if you share it, say so.
2. Fair play
Chess Advisor is for learning: reviewing finished games, training and preparing. Using engine analysis, move suggestions, board scanning (including quick scan from the screen), or AI answers during a game you are playing breaks the fair-play rules of most chess sites and over-the-board events. It can get your account closed or your result cancelled. You are responsible for following the rules of every site, club and event where you play. We are not responsible for any penalty you receive.
3. Optional AI features
AI commentary, follow-up questions, the AI Coach report, board scanning and scoresheet reading are off until you agree to use them, and you can turn them off at any time in Settings. When you use them, the app sends only what that feature needs to our server, which uses an AI model to answer. The Privacy Policy explains what is sent and where it may be processed. We may change the AI model or provider at any time.
- Limits. Each device has daily limits to prevent abuse and keep the service free. We may change these limits, or pause or stop the AI features, at any time without notice.
- Accuracy. AI-generated text can be wrong or incomplete, and a scanned position or scoresheet can be misread. Always check a scan before you use it.
- What you send. Only send photos and questions you have the right to share. Don't include other people, or anyone's personal information, in photos or questions.
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- call our server outside the app, automate requests, or try to get around the usage limits or the app's device check (App Check);
- use the app or our server to send unlawful, harmful or abusive content, or to try to make the AI produce it;
- interfere with, overload or try to gain unauthorized access to the app, our server or the services the app connects to;
- use the app in a way that breaks the law or the terms of a third-party service.
We may block requests that break these rules.
5. Third-party services
Some features use services run by others, for example Chess.com and Lichess (importing your public games, puzzles, endgame tablebases and "Import to Lichess"), GitHub (data downloads), Hugging Face (the narration voice download), Google Fonts, your device's speech service, and Apple or Google for purchases. Those services have their own terms and privacy policies, and they may change or stop at any time. Chess Advisor is not affiliated with or endorsed by Chess.com, Lichess or the Caissa project.
6. Supporter subscriptions
The app offers optional, auto-renewing supporter subscriptions, sold through the Apple App Store or Google Play. They support development and add supporter perks, currently a supporter badge and extra board themes. We may change the perks over time. Every feature of the app stays free for everyone, with or without a subscription.
- Billing. The store charges the price shown before you confirm, in your currency, to your App Store or Google Play account, under the store's terms. We don't receive or store your payment details.
- Automatic renewal. A subscription renews automatically at the end of each period, at the then-current price for that period, until you cancel it. To avoid being charged for the next period, cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
- Managing and cancelling. You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time in your App Store or Google Play account settings (the app's supporter screen links there). Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. After you cancel, the perks stay until the end of the period you have paid for.
- Price changes. If the price changes, the store tells you in advance and, where its rules or the law require it, asks for your consent before you pay the new price.
- Refunds. Refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their refund policies. Where the law allows it, we don't give refunds or credits for partial periods ourselves.
- Free trials and introductory offers. These apply only if the store shows them to you before you subscribe, on the terms shown there.
7. Your games and data
Games, analysis and progress you create stay on your device and belong to you. You are responsible for keeping backups: uninstalling the app or clearing its data deletes them unless you made a backup file. If you upload a game to Lichess, Lichess's terms apply to that upload.
8. No warranty
The app is provided "as is" and "as available". To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no warranties of any kind, express or implied, including that the app will be error-free or uninterrupted, or that any analysis, classification, evaluation, AI text or scan is correct.
9. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, ConeM Labs is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for loss of data, rating points, results or prizes, arising from your use of the app. Our total liability for any claim relating to the app is limited to the amount you paid for supporter subscriptions in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law, and nothing in them affects the consumer rights you have where you live.
10. Apple App Store
If you got the app from the Apple App Store, these terms are between you and ConeM Labs, not Apple. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app. If the app fails to meet an applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price (if any) to you; to the maximum extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation. Apple is not responsible for addressing any claims relating to the app, including product-liability claims, claims that the app fails to meet legal or regulatory requirements, consumer-protection claims, or claims that the app infringes someone's intellectual property. You confirm that you are not in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or listed as a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you are not on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you. You must also follow any third-party terms that apply when you use the app.
11. Ending these terms
You can stop using the app at any time by uninstalling it. We may suspend or end your access to our server (for example the AI features) if you break these terms. Sections 2 and 7 to 9 continue to apply after these terms end.
12. Changes
We may update these terms. The new version will be posted at this address with a new effective date. If the changes are significant, we will also point them out in the app or in the release notes. If you keep using the app after a change takes effect, you accept the updated terms.
